HP Cooperative Computing Solutions
for Knowledge Workers
HP Document
Manager
Introduction
In this highly competitive
information age, the key to
maintaining competitive
advantage is getting the right
information to decision
makers fast! Yet some
studies find that 80 percent
of the information that
decision makers use is not
contained in traditional
computer databases. Instead,
it is found in reports, memos,
articles, graphs,
spreadsheets, pictures, and
other materials. Organizing
and providing for fast
retrieval of this type of
unstructured information is
the strength of the HP
Document Manager.
HP Document Manager is a
business intelligence tool for
knowledge workers and
clerical workers. It provides
for easy storage and retrieval
of all types of shared and
unshared PC documents,
including word processing
documents, spreadsheets,
graphics, and other images
used for office
communications.
Figure 1
End-users can retrieve
documents through searches
using various external
attributes such as title,
author, date created, or user-
assigned keywords. HP
Document Manager also
provides for document
version control, archiving
and security control. It is
based on Saros*
Corporation's Mezzanine*,
recognized as the most fully-
featured, network-based PC
document management
engine available today.
An electronic document
management system can be
compared to an actual file
cabinet. A file cabinet
contains reports, memos,
graphs, and printed
spreadsheets that are stored
in file folders; each file
folder has a title on its tab
that can be viewed as a
keyword to everything in the
folder. However, a file
cabinet is a primitive
document management
system. No document can be
assigned more than one
"keyword" unless it is
photocopied and put into
multiple file folders.
Furthermore, a file cabinet is
an unwieldy document
management system; a file
cabinet itself represents a
wealth of stored information
that is typically being shared
by only a handful of people.
An electronic document
management system solves
all of these problems and
more by extending the
functionality of a file
cabinet. HP Document
Manager is a premier
document management
system capable of expertly
handling these
communications for work
groups, departments, and
enterprises.
HP Document Manager
helps knowledge workers
quickly find key strategic
and tactical information and
provides a cost-effective
means to improve the
efficiency of clerical
workers. The HP Document
Manager is an exceptional
document management
system for use in
client/server environments.
Not to be confused with
simple PC file finders, this
solution incorporates
leading-edge features
essential to a mission-critical
network.

can include access to data
via
Standard attributes (e.g.,
author, title, date created)
Administrator-defined
attributes (e.g., functional
area, project, legal docket
number
Up to 50 user-defined
keywords per document.
Broad range of client
support.
The system supports
cataloging of any MS-DOS,
MS-Windows, or HP
NewWave file and object,
